The original Gothic
sanctuary was renewed and a new bronze altar was moved forward into
the nave of the church beneath a 6-foot, 400-pound, bronze Carolingian
crucifix by Italian sculptor Thommaso Gismondi.

The cross is a signed replica of a work of art commissioned by the
Knights of Columbus for the Chapel of Saints Benedict, Cyril and Methodius
constructed by the Order beneath the basilica of St. Peter's in Rome.
It is modeled after a cross presented by Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor,
to St. Peter's in the 9th century and stolen from the Vatican in the
16th century.
