Stuff We've Done Recently
• Read and discussed Stumbling Blocks or Stepping Stones: Spiritual Answers to Psychological Questions by Benedict Groeschel. An atypical 'self help' book that attempts to solve psychological problems by focusing on God's love for us as well as our call to show forgiveness and charity towards others.
• Aided Birthright with their annual flower sale. Birthright is a fully independent organization and is not affiliated with any religious or political group or public agency. They offer free and confidential counseling and practical assistance to any girl or woman who feels distressed by an unplanned pregnancy.
• Read and discussed various chapters in the Pope John Paul II book Crossing The Threshold Of Hope. JP2 answers the questions you thought you couldn't ask. Topics included "If God Exists, Why Is He Hiding?", "Buddha?", and "Muhammad?"
• Group discussion of Just War Theory, pre-emptive war, and Iraq from a Catholic perspective.
• Read and discussed The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen. Nouwen, inspired by Rembrandt's painting of the biblical parable, examines forgiveness from the perspective of the prodigal son, his elder brother, and their father.
• Annual Christmas toy drive. Each year Veritas organizes a toy collection and delivers the gifts to children at Hospital For Special Care and the Children's Center of Hamden.
Stuff We're Planning To Do
Discussions: Veritas routinely picks the first meeting of each month to discuss that month's Sunday Mass readings. Occasionally we also select a book or other item for group discussion. Some future possibilities include The Lessons of St. Francis: How To Bring Simplicity and Spirituality Into Your Daily Life by John Michael Talbot or the papal encyclical Rerum Novarum.
Service: The Birthright flower sale and the Christmas toy drive are annual events in which Veritas routinely participates. Additionally, the group tries to seek out other opportunities to perform community service. For example, several group members are participating in the Alpha Achievement Program a local tutoring and mentoring program for grade school students.
Activities: All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Veritas recognizes the need to make time for fun and relaxation. Group members regularly get together for activities as varied as tennis, Catholic Dinner Club, or just drinks at a local pub. And our Mandatory Fun Night® is fast becoming a thing of legend.
